December 3rd Super Full Moon in Gemini

Feeling more emotional than normal?

This month we have the first and last Supermoon of 2017 – meaning the moon will come very close to Earth, rendering its emotional energies more powerful than usual.

With the sun in the joyful energy of Sagittarius and the Moon in the curious and playful energy of Gemini, this full moon should be one of the most pleasant of the year. And with Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius in trine to Neptune in Pisces, this is truly a time of spiritual blessings. Jupiter is always working on us to expand, expand in consciousness, expand in wisdom, expand in joy, and his trine (a 120 degree angle) to Neptune, the watery planet of spirituality, cosmic oneness and love, will help us raise our awareness of humanity as one family.

But other forces at play may not make this energy so easy connect to. Our heightened emotions may get the best of us, and now is the time, more than ever, to tap into the energy of surrender.

Saturn, the planet of restriction, has got a newly-retrograde Mercury in a stranglehold in Sagittarius. In retrograde, Mercury, the planet of the mind, will find its energies turned inwards. While we may be experiencing these beautiful energies of cosmic love, our mind will be feeling very contracted. It may be hard to express ourselves right now, and our thoughts might be playing tricks on us. If your thoughts seem more dismal than usual – Saturn’s serious nature can be very depressing – turn your attention to your body. How do you feel? If you take your attention away from your thoughts, can you feel a sense of love, connection, and joy? It’s very hard for us, sometimes, to surrender our minds – but try just the same. Surrender your ego thoughts and tune into the energy of God.

All of this will be highlighted by the upcoming holidays – isn’t this, after all, the twin threads that always run together at this time? The joy of connection and celebration of the deep mysteries coupled with mundane stresses of increase in traffic, miscommunication with family, trying to get the holiday meal planned and rolled out on time? We may find the need to surrender our expectations of how things should be to find joy and appreciate them because of how they actually are.

We may also be feeling the need to surrender our ego energies because of Neptune’s square to both the sun and the moon. While Neptune in trine with Jupiter is creating a lovely energy of spiritual expansion – the square (a 90 degree angle) is not as easy of an aspect. A square from Neptune may indicate a time where one feels confused, where things are not as they appear. Our egos - represented by the sun and the moon – may not be able to comprehend the spiritual changes happening to us now. And remember – the spiritual changes we are going through right now as a planet are big – this is why there has been so much chaos recently. We might, at this moment, find these massive influxes of energy harder to work with. When the outer planets, like Neptune, work on the inner planets, like the sun and moon, our tiny selves are being worked on by forces much larger than us, forces we may have a hard time understanding. We might run up against experiences that cause us to feel confused, frustrated, or at loose ends.

And if this happens to you, it’s time to surrender. Surrender your ideas about how things should be, surrender your worries and your fears, surrender your negativity, surrender your need to control. Surrender, and trust.

Trust in the wisdom of your body. Trust in the wisdom of the forces that are working on you, as the chickpea learns to do in Rumi’s poem "Chickpea to a Cook":

A chickpea leaps almost over the rim of the pot

where it’s being boiled.

‘Why are you doing this to me?’

The cook knocks him down with the ladle.

‘Don’t you try to jump out.

You think I’m torturing you.

I’m giving you flavour,

so you can mix with spices and rice

and be the lovely vitality of a human being.

Remember when you drank rain in the garden.

That was for this.’

Grace first. Sexual pleasure,

then a boiling new life begins,

and the Friend has something good to eat.

Surrender. This full moon, surrender is the way to tap into the divine, cosmic love that surrounds us at all times.
