Synchronicity and Astrology
Have you ever experienced a coincidence that was kind of too weird to be believed?
That’s what happened to me last week when I was visiting a legendary cave in Northern Vietnam called Mu Luong. The cave is legendary because there’s literally a legend about it. Inside the cave there is a river, and legend has it, on Lunar New Year a long time ago, a woman went there to fish. Instead of catching fish, she caught an egg. Not wanting an egg, she put it back into the river. But then she caught it again. And again, she released it. When she caught it a third time, she decided to take it home. She placed it under a chicken, and when it hatched, out came a snake! Now apparently, the snake was a very magical snake and everywhere it was taken, the rice fields would become more fertile and yield more corps. Finally as a way of saying thank you to the snake, the woman took it back to the cave where it transformed into a dragon.
As we were exploring the cave, the Vietnamese tour guide suddenly called all of us over. Shining his light on a ledge high above us, we could clearly see a long black python.
Later I went home and looked up more information about the cave. Apparently the snake, as a way of saying thank you for returning him to the cave, sends an abundance of fish to the river in the cave every year on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. Looking at the calendar, I realized that we had visited the cave the day before the 15th day of the seventh lunar Month. WHOA.
Now, perhaps seeing the python in the cave the day before this holiday was just a coincidence, and perhaps some people would just write it off as that. But to me, this is a wonderful example of synchronicity, “a meaningful coincidence.”
What is synchronicity? Synchronicity describes a phenomenon where we experience two seemingly related events, even though we cannot say how they are related. It’s a coincidence, but somehow more than that – we feel the events are meaningful in some way, even if we don’t understand exactly how. If you’ve ever been thinking about someone and then the phone rang – that’s synchronicity.
Sometimes synchronicity has deep personal meaning for you, and sometimes it’s just giving you a glimpse of the Greater Mystery – like seeing the snake in the cave was for me. Synchronicity is often a sign that you’re on the right path, spiritually, and often occurs more frequently around times of spiritual breakthrough and awakening. When I first had my spiritual awakening, synchronicity was everywhere.
What does synchronicity have to do with astrology? Well, almost everything. No one knows for sure why astrology works as a divinatory method – whether it’s because the planets are actually affecting us directly with their energy, or if the planets’ positions are reflecting a deeper energetic and archetypal stream that affects us all. This is the idea behind the maxim, “as above, so below.”
What happens above us is somehow meaningfully related to what happens within us. What happens in the stars is somehow connected to what happens in our lives.
Before I met my current partner, I was able to look at my astrology chart and see that Saturn was about to pass over a point called the Descendant – which typically indicates a period of time when a committed relationship begins. I didn’t know I was going to meet him, but I could see that was the kind energy at work in my life. Right after Saturn touched that point I met him, and even more coincidentally, there are connection between his astrological Saturn and that point in my chart!
I can look back to times of terrible grief and heartbreak in my life and see that Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth, was passing over my Venus, the planet of love. I can see how I was healed and reborn through that experience, even though it broke my heart at the time.
I can look even further back to when I was in the throes of suicidal depression and see how both Saturn and Pluto were acting on my Sun and Moon – indicating a time of heaviness and a strong need to be reborn – an energy I didn’t know how to channel or use any other way at the time besides becoming severely depressed.
When you look at things like this, you can find the greater meaning in them. You’re also more consciously able to work with the energies and understand them through using astrology. When a Saturn transit happens to you, you can consciously say to yourself, ok this will be frustrating but I can use this time to work hard and commit to long-term projects, or when a Pluto transit happens you can say, well, perhaps there will be something painful that arises but I know that at the end of the pain there is rebirth. You are able to understand your life as part of a magical and mysterious whole; that the things that happen to you are not just random, but somehow connected to the whole Universe.
